Tour Information
All riders are welcome,
but please note that this is
NOT A USCF - SANCTIONED RACE EVENT.
North Carolina Laws Prohibit Racing without a State Permit.
Please remember that the finish line closes at
3 PM,
with a SEVEN (7) HOUR TIME LIMIT
(67.2 miles in 7 hours).
The reason for this is the
thunder storms and lightning
that will sometimes build up starting around 1:30 on, and
these storms are
quite dangerous if you are in the water shed.
All riders MUST be able to maintain an average speed of 10 mph for the entire length of the course.
The course has approximately 7682 feet of cumulative climbing, including 10 long climbs and three very short steep (grunt!) hills.
Keep in mind that there are a number of long high speed down-hills where you can make up lost time on the climbs. Just take it easy going down these descents and have no accidents.
Remember the five mile descent to the finish line is very F A S T and there are several very dangerous places on this down-hill section. If you are not familiar with this mountain, keep you speed under control.
All traffic regulations and laws must be
observed.
Helmets are required and must be
worn for the entire length of the tour
All riders must ride
to the right side of the road at all times.
All Riders must assist vehicles in passing you.
We use the USCF Center Line Rule and it is in effect for this event. Some of the roads are very narrow, with lots of slow, with very sharp curves. Bad drivers compound the problem. There are little old ladies who drive looking through the steering wheel. There are people yakking on cell phones, munching on a Big Mac. Many of them drive as if they were half blind as well. They don't see bicycle riders very well at all! Don't get caught left of center or you may not live to tell about it!
