VFW Post 4873

The Landrum VFW Post 4873 meets at their post in Landrum, SC, on the Second Thursday of the Month starting at 1900 hours.  All are welcome to attend.  Please feel free to drop by and join in.  Our post is at 408 South Shamrock Street, Landrum, SC.

Directions: If coming from I-26 proceed to the traffic light in the center of Landrum and turn LEFT. If coming from US-176, cross the tracks and enter town and at the FIRST traffic light in the center of down town turn RIGHT and proceed to the bottom of the hill. Turn to the RIGHT next to and before Foreign Car Clinic and proceed up the hill to the Post.

VFW Post 4873 was chartered in September, 1988. During the early days, members concentrated on acquiring a post home.  Once this was established, an identity as a viable community asset was created.

Among many things this post does includes donations to youth activities and sponsoring the Voice of Democracy audio and the Patriot's Pen Essay Competition.  Also the Veterans in school classroom type of programs are sponsored by the VFW as well.

Since 1998, the Post Community Activities have gradually increased and now include:
    Visiting hospitalized veterans
Placing flags on veterans graves on special occasions
Holiday fruit baskets provided to senior citizens
Honor Guard service at Veterans Funerals
    Various recycling projects

Some notable accomplishments over the past five years include establishment of a Veterans Memorial in Landrum's Brookwood Park and Construction of a large gazebo providing a focal point of ongoing community activities, patriotic events, nature observations and meditation.

Completion of the nature trail is scheduled for October 2007.  Six picnic tables and two grills are complemented by a vast array of flowers and shrubs along with 13 bird houses and South Carolina Habitat Fence.

The entire facility was constructed by post members with private funding.  No tax payer money was involved in this project.  Area citizens are encouraged to utilize the facilities, free of charge.

Landrum was named most outstanding post in S.C. in 2005 and has been designated in five of the past six years as an "All - State" post by the VFW Department of South Carolina.

This Post proudly sponsored Mrs. Gloria Coleman in the first VFW National Citizenship Teacher of the Year Competition.  A fifth grade teacher at O. P. Earle Elementary School, Mrs. Coleman was selected as the year 2000 National Winner, bringing honor and a cash award to herself, her school and South Carolina.  Ms. Bessie Fisher, representing Post 4873 was selected to be South Carolinas Nominee in the 2004 competition.  Mrs. Meredith Paige Moore Representing Post 4873 was selected to be South Carolinas Nominee in the 2006 competitions. (Middle School Category)

In the Voice of Democracy and Patriot's Pen Contest, several student entries sponsored by Post 4873, have received top district awards as well.
