During the early days, members concentrated on acquiring a post home. Once this was established, an identity as a viable community asset was created. Among many things this post does includes donations to youth activities and sponsoring the Voice of Democracy audio and the Patriot's Pen Essay Competition. Also the Veterans in school classroom type of programs are sponsored by the VFW as well. Since 1998, the Post Community Activities have
gradually increased and now include: Some notable accomplishments over the past eight years include establishment of a Veterans Memorial in Landrum's Brookwood Park and Construction of a large gazebo providing a focal point of ongoing community activities, patriotic events, nature observations and meditation. Completion of the nature trail is scheduled for October 2008. Six picnic tables and two grills are complemented by a vast array of flowers and shrubs along with 13 bird houses and South Carolina Habitat Fence. The entire facility was constructed by post members with private funding. No tax payer money was involved in this project. Area citizens are encouraged to utilize the facilities, free of charge. Landrum was named most outstanding post in S.C. in 2005 and has been designated in six of the past seven years as an "All - State" post by the VFW Department of South Carolina. Charles Robinette was named most outstanding new member for year 2007-2008. This Post proudly sponsored Mrs. Gloria Coleman in the first VFW National Citizenship Teacher of the Year Competition. A fifth grade teacher at O. P. Earle Elementary School, Mrs. Coleman was selected as the year 2000 National Winner, bringing honor and a cash award to herself, her school and South Carolina.
